ICI's coatings business, ICI Paints, is a leading international paint business with a particularly wide geographic spread.

The business is headquartered in the UK and operates 60 manufacturing sites in 25 countries, selling in more than 120.

Decorative and protective coatings for the interior and exterior of buildings account for half of the world's consumption of paint. ICI Paints holds leading positions in many countries in which it operates, with well known brand names such as 'Dulux', 'Glidden', 'Valentine', 'Coral', 'Alba' and 'Color Your World'.

In addition, the recent acquisition of selected parts of the European Home Improvement business of Williams has given ICI strong brand names such as 'Hammerite', 'Cuprinol', 'Polyfilla', 'Polycell', 'Xyladecor', 'Alabastine' and 'Molto'.

ICI's links with The Home Depot, a US-based retailer, have been expanded with an agreement that means 'Glidden' and 'Glidden Ultra-Hide' brands are being carried at all locations of The Home Depot. The agreement means a wider customer base, including the small professional contractor.

Recent innovations in Decorative have included the launch in the UK of 'KidZone' for children's bedrooms, demonstrating ICI's strategy of creating new products for new market segments. In addition, the new 'Language of Colour' concept allows customers to match the mood they want to create in their decorating with paint - the concept divides the range into four moods and offers a co-ordinated range under each heading.

ICI also holds a prominent position in the packaging coatings industry and is a world leader in the specialised market for internal and external coatings for food and beverage cans and other metal containers. The business portfolio includes packaging inks and laminating adhesives and coatings for flexible packaging.

The packaging business continues to be successful in reducing solvent levels and has commercially launched new external coatings which provide superior protection and decoration to the outside of beer and beverage cans.

In 1999, ICI Paints announced challenging targets for its worldwide business, aiming for a 10:20:30 profile of achievement. These targets require that in the five years to the end of 2004, the business will achieve significant improvements in profitability, organic growth and Return on Net Assets to deliver

  • a 10 per cent return on sales (compared with 6.6 per cent in 1998),
  • a 20 per cent increase in sales through organic growth, and
  • a 30 per cent Return on Net Assets (compared with 18 per cent in 1998).
