National Starch and Chemical Company is a leading manufacturer of adhesives, specialty synthetic polymers, electronic and engineering materials, and specialty food and industrial starches.

National starch operates an international network of more than 125 manufacturing and customer service centers in 36 countries. In 1999, the company recorded its 30th consecutive increase in annual operating profit.

The business seeks to develop unique natural and synthetic polymers with significant commercial applications. A total of 1,200 employees are involved in R&D, which is carried out corporately as well as in each operating division.

National can trace its origins to 1895, when Alexander Alexander bought the National Gum and mica Company, a compounder of adhesives based on corn, potato, tapioca and other vegetable starches. The company's international expansion started in the 1920s and, with increased diversification of activities, the name National starch and Chemical Company was adopted in 1959.

With its headquarters at Bridgewater, New Jersey, USA, National has four business groupings, each with strategic business units (SBUs).
