National Starch and Chemical Company is a leading manufacturer of
adhesives, specialty synthetic polymers, electronic and engineering
materials, and specialty food and industrial starches.
National starch operates an international network of more than 125
manufacturing and customer service centers in 36 countries. In 1999,
the company recorded its 30th consecutive increase in annual operating
profit.
The business seeks to develop unique natural and synthetic polymers
with significant commercial applications. A total of 1,200 employees
are involved in R&D, which is carried out corporately as well as in
each operating division.
National can trace its origins to 1895, when Alexander Alexander bought
the National Gum and mica Company, a compounder of adhesives based
on corn, potato, tapioca and other vegetable starches. The company's
international expansion started in the 1920s and, with increased diversification
of activities, the name National starch and Chemical Company was adopted
in 1959.
With its headquarters at Bridgewater, New Jersey, USA, National has
four business groupings, each with strategic business units (SBUs).
