ICI is owned by major institutional investors such as pension funds, mutual funds in North America, insurance companies and banks as well as individuals, including employees. At the end of 1999, the company had 728 million shares held by more than 190,000 shareholders.

In addition to the number of registered shareholders shown below there are approximately 43,000 holders of American Depository Receipts (ADRs). The ADRs, each of which is equivalent to four £1 Ordinary Shares, are issued by Morgan Guaranty Trust Company of New York.
